How to Register a Business Name

A Step-by-Step Guide
Starting a business in Australia is exciting. Before you begin trading, one of your first steps should be registering your business name. This helps build credibility and keeps you compliant with Australian rules, whether you’re opening a café or running an online store.
What Is a Business Name?
A business name is what your business is known as when trading. It’s how customers find and remember you. This is different from your own name if you’re a sole trader, or your company’s official name if you have a company.
Do You Need to Register a Business Name?
You must register a business name if you operate under a name other than your own legal name. For example:
  • If your name is Darren Ellis and you trade as “Ellis Electrical,” you need to register that name.
  • If you’re using your full legal name (e.g., “Darren Ellis”), registration isn’t required.
Steps to Register Your Business Name
1. Choose Your Business Structure
Before you register, choose if you’ll be a sole trader, partnership, company, or trust. This choice affects your legal and tax responsibilities.
2. Get an ABN (Australian Business Number)
You need an ABN to register your business name. You can get one through the Business Registration Service.
3. Check Name Availability
Check the ASIC Business Name Register to make sure your chosen name is available. It’s also a good idea to look for existing trademarks with the TM Checker.
4. Register Online
After you confirm your name is available, register it online through the Business Registration Service. You can also sign up for GST and PAYG at this stage if needed.
5. Pay the Registration Fee
Fees (as of now) are:
  • 1 year: $45
  • 3 years: $104
6. Confirmation and Timeline
If your details are correct and you’ve paid, you’ll usually get confirmation within five business days.
Important Considerations
  • Trademark protection: Registering your business name doesn’t give you exclusive rights. To protect your brand, think about registering a trademark.
  • Domain and social media: Try to secure your website domain and social media names early so your brand stays consistent.
  • Display requirements: Make sure your business name is easy to see at your business location and on things like invoices and quotes.
Renewing Your Business Name
ASIC will let you know at least 30 days before your renewal is due. You can renew online using ASIC Connect. If you miss the deadline, your business name could be cancelled.
